Women's Action Web (WAW)

The purpose of the Women's Action Web is to provide Disciples women with a leadership development event related to service and justice issues.

What will I learn?

The Women's Action Web will enable and train participants to return to their own communities to replicate the WAW experience in their local region. The logistics and organizational aspects of creating a WAW experience will be addressed. Funding issues will be discussed. Needs assessment tools will be introduced. Information on how to organize and empower community will be offered.

General information

WAW participants build a faith community in which experience and learning leads to:

  • Developing an awareness of common needs and possible solutions, both in the areas visited and in the participant’s local community;
  • Developing skills to recognize needs in one’s local community;
  • Learning how to link one’s congregation to existing programs and services;
  • Developing skills to create ministry where none exists.

Criteria for Participants

  • Open to learning, willing to study, physically able to participate;
  • Connected to structures for women in their Region;
  • Able and committed to plan/lead a similar experience in their Region;
  • Diverse in age, ethnicity, economics and geographic area.

"Every site we visited had one theme—when God and your faith are placed first, things will be accomplished."

—Teresa Olberding
WAW Virginia/Capital Area participant, 2004

"Mission work is not about 'helping' people; it is about providing tools and empowering ourselves and others to be God’s people within our own communities. It is about a woman who offers what she has to another, who then shares with another, and she with another ..."

Rosy Cunningham
WAW Appalachia participant, 2000

What makes WAW special? Most past participants would probably agree that ACTION is what makes WAW a unique experience.

We all had different goals and expectations of what the trip from San Diego to central California would offer ... however we have taken many different paths since that trip but many of us remain in contact as we mentor and support each other.
